CNBC reported on August 26 that Anthropic had agreed to rent roughly 460 MW of capacity from Nscale for about $45 billion. The terms came from unnamed sources. The campus plan supplies useful context, but is not a public copy of that contract.
Two sources describing different things
CNBC's report attributes the arrangement to people familiar with it and gives late 2027 as the expected start. That is a reported delivery target, not evidence that the capacity is serving Claude now.
The Monarch campus page, checked September 8, describes a 1.35 GW first phase targeted for early 2028, within a longer expansion plan. The dates and scopes differ. Neither source establishes that every building, power system and customer allocation will become available simultaneously.
Do not turn megawatts into a GPU count
MW measures power; GPU count measures equipment. Converting between them requires a defined boundary and a configuration. A number may refer to computing equipment, an entire building including cooling, or generation capacity before operational allowances.
An original arithmetic example shows why the distinction matters. Suppose a hypothetical facility draws 120 MW in total while its computing equipment draws 100 MW. The ratio of total facility power to IT power is 1.20. Dividing the full 120 MW by the power of one accelerator would incorrectly allocate cooling and other facility consumption to accelerators. CPUs, memory and networking also consume part of the IT allocation.
These example values are not measurements of Monarch. The announced figures alone do not provide its operating efficiency or its final GPU inventory.
What would demonstrate delivery
For someone assessing future AI availability, three records answer more than the headline value: the capacity actually accepted by the customer, the date it became operational and the service available on it. A construction target answers none of those by itself.
Likewise, a total contract value is not a unit price for electricity or a price per generated token. It can cover hardware, financing, operations and commercial commitments over time. Without the agreement's billing schedule and service definition, a division by megawatts produces a ratio with very limited meaning.
This article therefore retains the historical report while separating it from Nscale's campus plan. No inference about Claude's immediate rate limits or subscription prices follows from either announcement.
